Ancient rails twist and turn among landscapes and art, while crossing Italian Paths promoting new and sustainable forms of tourism.
Timeless Railing (Binari senza tempo) is the project of Italian FS Foundation – Fondazione FS Italiane (with MIBACT associated since 2015) for reactivating disused railing for tourist purposes.
Set outside the big railway hubs and the standard railroad tracks, these old routes represent a kind of dynamic museum the Foundation intends to preserve and enhance.
The growth of these tourism’s forms – + 45% in the last two years (2016 and 2017) on the previous two ones, with 130 tourists travelling by historic trains – proves travellers’ increasing demand for slow mobility suggestions, as the emotion out of travelling by an historic train, through landscapes rich in history and culture.
Abruzzo, Campania, Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Molise, Piemonte, Tuscany and Sicily have already bet on historic rail tracks as new tourism vectors, including them in their respective business plans.
A choice enhancing a way of “making tourism” as promoted in the recent Strategic Plan for Tourism 2017-2022, fitting perfectly in The Digital Atlas of the Paths in Italy. The Timeless Railing’s paths, in fact, will appear in the Atlas by specific POI– in green – indicating all the Nodes where by getting down a path it can get on a coach for a time’s travel.
“ Rail tourism allows discovering the beauty of Italian less known territories and implementing their sustainable re-launching. Thanks also to historic trains, today it may disclose new cultural and landscapes routes and it invests in sustainable tourism, while facilitating new innovative travel experience”.
