From Sant'Ellero near Florence to Assisi and then to Sabina, touching the many places of St. Francis's life
The path of The Way of St. Francis starts from Sant’Ellero, just outside Florence and arrives in Sabina, in the upper part of Lazio. Touching different symbols in the life of Francis. Places where the Saint retreated in meditation, such as the Hermitage of Camaldoli, the Sanctuary of the Verna or the Convent of Montecasale and Gubbio.
From the Hermitage of Camaldoli, where Francesco probably attended the consecration of the church in 1220, the route leads to the Sanctuary of Verna, the world-famous pilgrimage site, before proceeding to Assisi and Monte Libretti. Places in the centre of Italy, known for their beauty and spirituality, such as Spoleto and Greccio, accompany the traveller to Sabina, a stone’s throw from Rome.
Alternatively, you can cycle on different routes on gravel roads, quiet provincial roads and established paths.
